Cancer Support Scotland first began 40 years ago, in the cosy living room of Sir Kenneth Calman. Now in our home amidst the leafy grounds of Gartnavel Hospital, we’ve worked hard to make sure things don’t feel a whole lot different. The Calman Centre was created as a safe space, helping everyone we support to feel at ease and in control. Where better then, than in a giant living room – where family and friends are welcome and the kettle is always on.

The charity has worked tirelessly in support of the original vision of Sir Kenneth Calman through developing key services to support our beneficiaries overcome challenges in their everyday lives – to great success.

Cancer Support Scotland provides emotional and practical support to those affected by Cancer. Offering counselling, complementary therapy, stress management and podiatry through one-to-one and groups based methods.

In the last year Cancer Support Scotland has offered over 6,500 appointments and demand for our services is steadily rising.

The charity has around 20 members of staff and 200 volunteers across Scotland. Our staff are based within the Calman Centre in Glasgow and our volunteers cover Scotland.

The charity has just completed a strategic review and have set out the commitment to grow and develop a professional and highly skilled fundraising team to support our annualised income target of around £650,000 during 2019/20.

The post holder will have strategic oversight of Cancer Support Scotland’s communication output and income generation, with the expectation for growth each financial year.

The Head of Fundraising & Communications will be a strategic thinker who will maximise fundraising income by developing, executing and managing fundraising across all the income streams to ensure long term and sustainable income growth.

Fundraising & Communications

  • Lead, inspire and develop all members of the fundraising and communications team
  • Lead the development and implementation of a fundraising and communications strategy that underpins strategic goals to achieve income growth in a sustainable way and an increase in brand awareness
  • Lead the development of a fundraising and communications plan which includes key activities, areas of investment, KPIs and milestones as well as projected areas of growth
  • Establish a range of new income streams, with an emphasis on digital technologies and utilising service skill sets.
  • Analysing and reporting on all KPI and income targets, adjusting the fundraising and communications programme considering results and experience gained, to maximise new opportunities or to mitigate programme under performance.
  • Monitor, evaluate and control income and expenditure on a regular basis. Reporting on all activity and results and re-forecasting’s annual performance in close collaboration
  • Ensure a comprehensive and integrated ‘donor’ journey (including our membership) is in place
  • To embed a culture of fundraising across the whole organisation
  • To ensure day to day operations such as income monitoring, evaluating and reporting are carried out to a high standard.
  • To liaise with relevant staff and outside agencies as required

  • Work closely with the CEO and other members of the Leadership Team
  • To build a team that is ambitious, innovative and professional.
  • To provide positive, resilient, dynamic and flexible leadership
  • To demonstrate a strong commitment to collaboration, creativity, accountability for objectives and modelling our values and core competencies
  • Ensure fundraising is in line with all current fundraising regulatory standards, data protection, VAT and Gift Aid legalisation
  • Be an active participant within the leadership team ensuring forward planning and effective day to day management of the charity including business planning, financial forecasting and strategic decision making
  • Working across the charity to develop systems and process that will enhance the organisation
  • Strengthen the awareness and perception of Cancer Support Scotland
  • Any other relevant duties as may be required by the CEO.
