Director of Development & Operations for JustRight Scotland

This position is now closed

Job description...

Welcome from the CEO

It’s been two years since I was in your shoes, reading the job description for an exciting role at JustRight Scotland and thinking about applying. I’m so glad I did.

Every day, we can all look around and see injustice everywhere. The fight for rights is needed just as much as ever – and in many cases, more so. Unfortunately, the gaps that drove our founders to set up JustRight Scotland still exist.

But now, seven years into our own journey, we have a whole team of people working in those gaps. We have lawyers and caseworkers giving advice, representing clients, working in close collaboration with other support services, helping to bring justice to people who would otherwise have nowhere to turn.

And from that, we have evidence that we gather and share with people who make laws and policies, working to change the whole system for the better. That is never easy, but it is always essential.

We can look back on our work and see the difference we’ve made, even in a short space of time. From landmark legal victories to campaigns that have changed things for the better for thousands of people, to the less visible but just as important successes for the individual people we help every day.

We’ve grown beyond anything our founders might have imagined back in 2017. Of course, the world was a very different place then and we’ve had to grow up quickly in a tough and fast-moving environment. I’m pleased that we’ve withstood those challenges and have come through our early growth and “difficult teenage years” in really good shape. Our new Director of Development and Operations will be instrumental in keeping us that way.

I hope you’ll feel excited about the prospect of joining this incredible team. We look forward to hearing from you!

Emma Hutton

Chief Executive Officer

Message from Our Founder

I am so proud of JustRight Scotland, and the difference that our team makes everyday in the lives of people struggling to access justice, across Scotland.

Over the past six years, JRS has grown beyond the hopes and expectations of our co-founders – and is now a strong, stable and independent voice for human rights and social justice, as well as a trusted partner to the people and communities we exist to serve.

You’ll be joining an organisation that has grown and matured, and now needs a fantastic person to continue to drive our development whilst ensuring that our operational capacity remains robust enough to give our team the flexibility and support they need to keep making a real difference.

You can expect to work with a group of talented, enthusiastic and open-minded people who have the motivation and creativity to keep our work relevant, vital and impactful.

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of JustRight Scotland’s founding story, and have no doubt that the next chapter will see the organisation go from strength to strength.

Jen Ang

Co-founder of JustRight Scotland

JustRight Scotland is a charity founded by human rights lawyers. Set up in 2017, our vision is of a Scotland where everyone’s human rights are realised and systemic barriers to justice are dismantled.

We work towards this by using the law to defend and extend people’s rights, particularly people who would otherwise struggle to access justice. In 2022-23, we directly supported around 2,000 people and indirectly benefited many more. We do this by:

  • providing free, specialist, confidential legal advice and representation;
  • publishing accessible “know your rights” information;
  • taking strategic legal challenges that act as “test cases”;
  • developing partnerships with other frontline organisations;
  • working alongside people with lived experience of the issues we work on;
  • using experience from our frontline work to influence policy; and
  • training public authorities, third sector organisations and others.

We currently operate four specialist legal centres – the Scottish Women’s Rights Centre, Scottish Refugee and Migrants Centre, Scottish Anti-Trafficking and Exploitation Centre, and Scottish Just Law Centre.

We also run a successful policy, communications and participation hub, known as Just Right For All. Our subsidiary social enterprise, JRS Knowhow Ltd, provides training and learning services.

In just seven years since our birth, we have grown from a few people working around a kitchen table to become a team of around 25 staff, with offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Having invested heavily in strengthening our organisation in recent years, we are now embarking on the next stage of our development. With a new five-year Strategic Plan launching in spring 2024, this is an exciting time to join our team!

JustRight Scotland is proud to be a Disability Confident employer. We are committed to ensuring that disabled people have the opportunity to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations within our workplace. As part of our commitment to inclusivity, we welcome applications from individuals with disabilities and will make reasonable adjustments to support their application and participation in the recruitment process. We will offer an interview to any applicant declaring a disability, who also meets the minimum criteria for the role. If you require any assistance or adjustments as part of the application process, please get in touch.

The Director of Development and Operations is a key member of JustRight Scotland’s executive leadership team, central to ensuring our successful performance and continued development as a leading human rights law centre and charity in Scotland.

Working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, this role provides strategic leadership to our organisational development, funding and income generation, and to our financial, people and operations management. The role is responsible for ensuring these functions are fully aligned with the charity’s Strategic Plan and that they perform efficiently, effectively and in line with our values.

The role’s responsibilities span project, service and partnership development; funding and income generation; funding and grant management for a £1M+ portfolio; organisational budget and financial management (turnover in 23-24 of £1.5M); senior oversight of all operational functions; deputising for the CEO as required; and reporting to the Board of Trustees.

A collaborative approach is crucial, with a strong focus in this role on creating and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, Executive colleagues, Trustees, and external partners.

The role holds delegated decision-making authority for a range of substantial budgetary, operational and policy responsibilities and directly manages two staff.
